Hokoan, led by the renowned urushi producer Takuo Matsuzawa, is a unique workshop that has been creating unprecedented urushi art pieces based in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, the leading urushi-producing region in Japan. With the theme of "learning from the past to create something new," Hokoan aims to showcase the allure of lacquer from Iwate, Japan's foremost urushi-producing area, to the world.
Selected as a member of the 2016 LEXUS NEW TAKUMI PROJECT, Hokoan has been awarded the Good Design Award in 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2020. The works have garnered high praise from Katsuhiko Takahashi, a renowned writer and ukiyo-e researcher, who describes them as "fountain pens to boast about."
The name "Hokoan" represents the soft radiance emitted from the urushi coating.
